I bought this hopping to be able to start my own internet business. I gave up with out being able to. The internet moves at such a fast pace, this book was outdated when I got it. All though it does have some good reference material. With this book alone I could not make my own internt Business (or blog for money). Still worth having for the reference materials though.Get more detail about Starting an Online Business All-in-One Desk Reference For Dummies.

Low Price The Lost Books of The Odyssey: A Novel

In this remarkable book Zachary Mason 're-imagines' The Odyssey of Homer from a number of different viewpoints. Forty-four retellings of the greatest story ever told. It kept me spellbound for hours.

Tackling small chunks of the original story, Mason sometimes introduces a new twist, or changes the narrator, alters the books internal logic or remixes the original with fascinating results.

So you have a version in which Odysseus finds himself bored on Ithaka so sets off to retrace his steps, revisiting the scenes of his adventures.

In another, The Iliad is revealed to be an elaborate set of rules for playing chess.

Or the suggestion that Paris was, in fact, another name for Death and is was the Grim Reaper himself who stole Helen, leading Menelaus to declare war on Hades rather than Troy.

And one chapter is narrated by the cyclops Polyphemus, offering a slightly different take on the version of legend.

The Lost Books of the Odyssey is not, I would suggest, a book to sit down and read from start to finish. It isn't intended as a linear narrative - many of the chapters contradict themselves - and is, instead, a volume to dip into over a couple of weeks. Although, be warned, it is hard to leave it alone for very long.

This is a short work of epic imagination. It will, I am sure, prove a delight to anyone who has ever read and loved Homer's two epic poems, although those unfamiliar with them may well wonder what all the fuss is about. They are very much favourites of mine and it is high praise indeed when I say that I will be shelving this book alongside them.

I confidently predict that The Lost Books of the Odyssey will feature prominently in the book of the year round ups, but don't wait till then, treat yourself now.Get more detail about The Lost Books of The Odyssey: A Novel.

Just a short note to say that I was absolutely delighted by how well this book is written. The author seems to truly want to teach, as opposed to wanting to make money. And teach he does, in a very well disciplined approach of describing the fundamentals before proceeding to describe the details. I gained most of my Spring knowledge from this excellent book and heartily recommend it for anyone who wants get up and running with Spring MVC.Get more detail about Spring Recipes: A Problem-Solution Approach.

Cheapest Windows PowerShell 2.0 Administrator's Pocket Consultant

This Book has it all right at your finger tips! Microsoft has done a superior job in expounding and down to the depths in PowerShell 2.0 with details, details, details - with How to's including images. Including the important information(s) of the possibilities "if you do this, then you might experience that" - with cautions, warnings, et cetera.

I MUST STRESS THIS EMPHASIS - Please take your time in reading this book! Do not rush through this, having a highlighter, colored pencil, write in it, make notes even though it comes with notes - read it all over again. While it does discuss both PowerShell v1.0 and v2.0; you will learn about both as well as the differing betwixt the two which can be very important to know in various areas. Especially for Businesses and Corporations that are working with both 64 bit and x86 aka 32 bit platforms.

I strongly recommend this book - this one is not going to be the one to be "thrown away or tossed aside" for one will want to return back to it for it is loaded with answers if one were to ever "run into a jam", in my humble opinion.Get more detail about Windows PowerShell 2.0 Administrator's Pocket Consultant.

Cheap Mastering Unreal Technology, Volume I: Introduction to Level Design with Unreal Engine 3

As an aspiring indie game developer with web development and programming background I've been looking in a lot of different places for a good reference book to get me started. This book gives a great high-level overview of the game development process using UE3 without boring the s&&* out of you with the detailed history of pacman etc. or endless dry coding discourse. I have actually gone through several books on the topic as well as lots of online tutorials, and I'm loving what I'm finding in this book. Note that I am learning on the recently-released Unreal Development Kit, which is just a little bit different from the editor that I got with UT3 -don't worry about this and just poke around until you find the control or button that you're looking for and you'll be set.Get more detail about Mastering Unreal Technology, Volume I: Introduction to Level Design with Unreal Engine 3.

Buying Designing with Web Standards (3rd Edition)

Jeffrey Zeldman did it again. He made a huge impact with his Designing with Web Standards book (1st ed) close to a decade ago. Well, he's published his third edition, and it is as insightful as the first. This book is up to date, and covers modern technologies, from HTML5 to CSS3 to IE8.

Readers of this book will gain a valuable insight into the recent history of web standards, be shown where things are now, and get a glimpse at where they may be going.

Anyone connected to the web development process should read this book: developers (obviously), designers, supervisors. The book uses simple language, is not code-heavy, and is readable by programmers and non-programmers.Get more detail about Designing with Web Standards (3rd Edition).

Where To Buy C++ GUI Programming with Qt 4 (2nd Edition) (Prentice Hall Open Source Software Development Series)

This book is fantastic, probably the best programming book I have ever read. I didn't even know c/c++ when I started reading (Java developer), but lo! and behold, there is an appendix for Java/c# developers to teach them how to use c++. I have read the book cover to cover and had absolutely no problems understanding any of the concepts in the book. I didn't need to reread anything. I am not sure what some of the other reviewers are talking about; maybe it is because I am familiar with Swing and .Net gui development and the concepts are basically the same. The parts in particular about slots and signals mentioned below I felt was done extremely well. I don't know how other programmers learn, but I learn by seeing some code in action then piecing together what it does line by line. If that isn't how you learn, I would get a different book.

This book is organized like this,

brief intro to a topic
code example of topic
line/group of lines by line explanation of code. Here they explain both the big and little pictures, "signals are used for ... and here is how you connect them in the code... here are some reasons to use signals... etc"
brief outro of a topic

I really can't say how perfect this book is, it is perfect. I went from not knowing c++ to writing professional looking apps in a weekend. I am not saying that will be the case for everyone (obviously look at the other guy's review, sounds like he couldn't figure out how to compile his code...). Keep in mind, as I've mentioned I have been programming for years in Swing and .Net, so I would definitely say I had a head start for understanding the concepts which Qt was built on.

P.S. Qt is pronounced "cute".Get more detail about C++ GUI Programming with Qt 4 (2nd Edition) (Prentice Hall Open Source Software Development Series).

CompTIA Network+ Study Guide: Exam N10-004

The book is top notch for those studying for the Network+ Test. The author goes into great detail about not only the objectives expected for a candidate to know, but additional data for network engineers who are or will be working in a networked environment in the near future. The test engine and questions were very similar to what will be seen on the actual test, though I found the review process after every chapter test to be a bit tedious to go through. A better improvement would be to be able to review what you missed, not every dang question! Overall worth having in your library.Get more detail about CompTIA Network+ Study Guide: Exam N10-004.

World of Warcraft: Stormrage This instant

I must say, Knaack's writing was a serious disappointment. I've been reading fantasy and sci-fi since 1985, when I first read the hobbit and the Lord of the Rings trilogy, and I've read major writers over the years (Assimov, Jordon, Weber, etc.) and I've have to rate Stormrage's writing near the bottom. I was a bit surprised, given how many books he's already written in the series. I have a problem with writers in love with their own work, and Knaack definitely is fully in love with his pen. This book was very difficult to get through, and but provided some great lore background.Get more detail about World of Warcraft: Stormrage.

Sams Teach Yourself Java in 24 Hours (5th Edition) Immediately

This book is not a comprehensive guide but covers a large amount of the java programming language in its 419 pages. The text is easy to read but parts of it may have to be read a couple times to fully grasp the concepts. has many code samples as well as full working programs. There is a quiz at the end of each chapter and Activities that test your knowledge of what has been covered so far. This book does a great job explaining most concepts but others are to large to cover completely in this book after all you can only cover so much in a single book. A good starter book some of it runs through java concepts but gives good explanations of all concepts so a basic understanding is grasped of the more complex concepts. Text covers applets, independent java programs, errors, exceptions, calculations, user interfaces, using java and HTML/XHTML (does not teach these languages just uses them to implement java into web pages), creating web services, storing information, using basic graphics with java, Arrays, OOP (object oriented programming), Inheritance, and Variables.

I strongly suggest this book if you want a basic to advanced understanding of java 6 or aren't sure if you want to learn java as this book touches on almost all of java 6. I don't suggest getting his other book Sams Teach Yourself Java 6 in 21 Days (5th Edition) as it is a frustrating book to learn form for most people and considered error-us.

Small Business Kit for Dummies Best Quality

I was pretty savvy about starting a business but I needed something which would remind me to do things which might not have found their way into my checklist. This book kept me on track and made it much easier to do what I needed to do and become protected where I needed protection. Parts of this book are indeed outdated and some are as fresh and enduring as can be but it is a supremely useful tool if for the documents you want on disc, boilerplates for a variety of situations, and more. Read this book and do what it says. Yes, it's a pain in the *ss to make up a business plan, just go do it. Yes, it hurts to take a cold eyed look at your finances, just go do it. Wow, I really hate to think that someone would steal my intellectual property just because I don't have a copyright, or that some nice lady would sue me for any reason at all... It can and does happen. This book helps you to protect yourself before any trouble can crash your dreams for you. How to incorporate, what sort of tax repercussions you can expect, employing others, web sites (a bit outdated but still at least the basics), it's all here.

So, get this book, read it, and do what it tells you to do and nobody will get hurt.Get more detail about Small Business Kit for Dummies.

Special Edition Using Microsoft Office Word 2007 Order Now

I bought this book as a reference as I began to format a book. I haven't thoroughly evaluated this book yet but, the two times I needed to refer to it so far, it was of no help.

The first problem I encountered was creating a Table of Contents. I was working on a 6 X 9 document. The created Table of Contents ran off the page. I couldn't figure out what the problem was. The section on Table of Contents and the index were of no help. I found the answer I needed in seconds by Googling it.

Next, somehow a border had crept into some of my headers and footers. The section on headers and footers didn't address this problem. I found the solution within minutes on-line.

It may still prove to be useful somehow but so far, not so much.Get more detail about Special Edition Using Microsoft Office Word 2007.

Diffusion of Innovations, 5th Edition Right now

Everett M Rogers, Diffusion of Innovations (New York: Free Press, 2003 [1962]).

The diffusion of innovation is a conceptual framework in sociology for understanding innovation and change management. Rogers has collected findings from diffusion research and explains the innovation-diffusion process, the motivation of dissonance, characteristics of adopters, opinion leadership, consultation and the pace of change. Diffusion is about communicating a new idea and persuading people to adopt and implement it. Innovativeness as the degree to which a person or group is relatively early in adopting new ideas. Rogers identifies five types of innovativeness among people: (1) venturesome innovators, who are obsessed with being more venturesome than other members of society; (2) respectable early adopters, to whom others look for advice about an innovation; (3) deliberate early majority, bigger on deliberation and slower to follow; (4) skeptical late majority, who eventually adopt; and (5) traditional laggards who value tradition over all and slowly or never adopt innovations (pp.279-285). Rogers' categories are helpful for identifying appropriate organisational change processes. (From my "The Shaping of Things Now: Mission and Innovation in Emerging Churches in Melbourne", DTheol thesis, MCD, 2009, pp.26-30)

Save Wireshark Network Analysis: The Official Wireshark Certified Network Analyst Study Guide

I saw this book in the Tech Ed 2010 book store the day before Laura's session and thought $99 - you've got to be kidding! After seeing her present in her first session, my opinion changed completely and I rushed (along with many other attendees at the session) directly to the bookstore down the hall to grab a copy.

Needless to say the book sold out immediately and I was lucky to have obtained one.

I have been in the Networking industry for close to 20 years, and Laura has the unique ability to make this material understandable and accessible for anyone that has basic network knowledge. Coupled with her sense of humor, it enables one to tackle this esoteric topic and even enjoy it along the way.

This book has enabled me to "fill in the gaps" in my network analysis skill set and I look forward to referring to it for a long time to come.

Great job Laura, I look forward to seeing more material from you in the future!Get more detail about Wireshark Network Analysis: The Official Wireshark Certified Network Analyst Study Guide.

Discount The Social Media Marketing Book

Zarrella's "Social Media Marketing" is a quick read, and useful for helping mid-level and c-suite execs understand the basics of social media use, set up, and maintenance. This may not be the best social media marketing book on the shelf today, but it's a great way to begin the conversation about corporate social media usage with your boss, or your boss' boss. Most execs understand the basics of marketing, and Zarrella's brief and simple explanations of various social media platforms tucked inside a marketing wrapper helps sugar-coat their social media education. While the chapter on social media measurements is a little too broad to be immediately useful, the "takeaway tips" at the end of each chapter provides readers great "elevator pitches" they can use when talking to higher-ups. My advice: if you're in charge of social media for your organization, buy a few copies and place around the executive suite for others to read. It's bound to help others recognize the opportunities (and challenges) in using social media for your organization's outreach.Get more detail about The Social Media Marketing Book.

Purchase FileMaker Pro 11: The Missing Manual

FileMaker Pro is considered to be the easiest to use of relational databases - and it is. It is also one of the most capable and powerful databases - and if you want to access that power, it is one of the most complex.

That's why this book has 869 pages of text, including 7 pages of error codes. You'll never see most of these error codes, but the sheer number of them should give you an idea of just how complex FileMaker Pro can be.

This book truly lives up to the premise of the missing manuals series: "the book that should have been in the box".

FileMaker Pro provide s extensive online help facility, but it is often terse and lacking in examples.

The FileMaker Pro missing manual, on the other hand, is pleasantly verbose and has many examples. Moreover, it provides a necessary education in database theory and design as well. There's a wonderful introduction, for example, on using Boolean values.

FileMaker Pro has many unique features, such as repeating fields and portals. The book explains them all. Of special interest to users beyond the beginner stage are the chapters on scripting within FileMaker Pro.

It is not an exaggeration to say that "FileMaker Pro 11: The Missing Manual" is an entire course on using FileMaker Pro. The authors have just the right writing style - not too sparse, not too talkative. Every page is packed with useful information not just on FileMaker, but on creating databases as well.

You can use this book as an A-to-Z training course or as a reference. It's a great - if not mandatory - investment for your FileMaker library.

Jerry

Order Practical Arduino: Cool Projects for Open Source Hardware (Technology in Action)

Great Book. Looking forward to building and modifying some of the projects. This book could be read and used by a novice but having some experience with the Arduino and some smaller projects would be of benefit. Book was clear, only got bogged down in a couple of spots, just reread the section and got it figured out. Not a big problem. This title is packed with lots of information, offers variations to the basic projects and cause one to think about how it could be altered to meet your own needs. The programming gets a little heavy later in the book, that is where it would help to have at least a bit of experience with the device and basic programming. Unlock the Hidden Job Market: 6 Steps to a Successful Job Search When Times Are Tough Get it now!

As one who has been fortunate to never have had to look long for work until recently, I found this book a source of practical advice on how to approach job hunting. There is nothing easy, consistent, or predictable about job hunting. It can be a messy and frustrating business. How do you reach the hiring manager? How do you approach persons you do not know to learn of opportunities in your chosen profession? What do you say when you manage to get audience with a contact who knows the hiring persons to make the most of the conversation? The book provides a workable method and tool to assist. Is the book for everyone? Maybe not. But if you want to do more than respond to posted jobs which is how the fewest number of jobs are realized, and the networking concept is foreign to your nature and a pattern to follow would help, then this book is an excellent reference. Based upon research of what successful job hunters do and how they conduct themselves, the chapters are purposely short to focus on each factor and to provide an example of how it might manifest.

Job hunting is work. There are no short cuts here. But, there are constructive ideas of how to go at the goal of getting back to gainful employment and suggestions for supportive activity to reinforce your hirability.Get more detail about Unlock the Hidden Job Market: 6 Steps to a Successful Job Search When Times Are Tough.

World of Warcraft: Rise of the Horde (No. 4) Buy Now

This book is for Warcraft fans and many die hards will enjoy the depth it goes into and the explanations it gives. Pure fantasy nuts may want to stay away and, it goes without saying, that if you do not care for the literary style of Golden you should move right along. While I thought Arthas was a far better read than this book, the subject is a rooted before the time of WoW and players should know that. Upon completion of the book players of the MMO will know a lot more about the burning crusade and its events than they previously did and may have a better appreciation for that expansion and what was occurring there. Players of Warcraft III will probably recognize Archimonde and other characters and if they don't, all the cinemas are easily found on YouTube nowadays.

I would recommend picking this up if you have a few hours/days and you want to get some more lore in your head before Golden's new book about Cataclysm comes out. If you haven't read Arthas, pick that one up first, it's in paperback now and it's a quick and satisfying read.Get more detail about World of Warcraft: Rise of the Horde (No. 4).

The New New Thing: A Silicon Valley Story Right now

It is hard to fathom Jim Clark, whom this book is really about, lead three different Billion Dollar companies: Silicon Graphics, Netscape, and Healtheon (WebMD). He and his companies are the focus of this book. The author also gives a heck of a review of the crazy times that were the late 1990s in technology but as well as the stock market. I think Biff Tannen (you know Biff from Back to the Future) would have been better off with this book than his Sports Almanac. Imagine knowing the exact companies to pick in the stock market during the tech stock bubble. Not only that but when to take your money off the table and out of the market.

After having read first Moneyball, then the Blindside it was wired to go backwards and read one of Michael Lewis's earlier works. He has certainly improved as time has gone forward. This book seemed a bit more raw, and less polished than his later works. It was nice to walk through the time line of the internet bubble again and think back to when the most legally created money was happening in history. Again this is why I think Biff would have been better off with this than the almanac from Back to the Future. Our good friend Biff probably would have had a hard time finding his way to Vegas to make a legal bet. Just as in the line from the book "Change leads to wealth and wealth means money", in Biff's case or Jim Clark's.

It was shocking to find out the main reason Clark pushed for the Netscape IPO was to finance his boat. In fact the story of the boat he built felt really disjointed but they do tie together Silicon Valley and starting up companies with building a computerized yacht. I really despise the fact Jim created myCFO. To create yet another company after he has already start 3 with such a simple concept is irritating to us mere mortals.

I would say only three groups of people would enjoy this book:

1. Michael Lewis Fans
2. Tech nerds who want to hear the inside story of SGI and Netscape
3. People from the valley who want to recall the gold old days

Other than those groups you can probably skip this one. Well, that is unless you have a time machine and want to make some serious money in the stock market.

Lowest Price Fallout 3 Game of the Year Edition: Prima Official Game Guide (Prima Official Game Guides)

If you're thinking about getting this, just get it. It has a ton of information. After I play through a quest or area, I'll check the guide to find things that I missed. If I get stuck, I'll consult this guide. It's all there. You'll probably overlook a few quests without this. I even sit and read the book for fun when my wife is using the TV. The maps could be a little better, but the book does cover a lot!Get more detail about Fallout 3 Game of the Year Edition: Prima Official Game Guide (Prima Official Game Guides).

Save Beginning C++ Through Game Programming, Second Edition

I bought the Kindle version of this book, so there is no companion CD-ROM. When you go to the website recommended for download of files for the CD-ROM, you are immediately redirected to a site that will sell you the CD-ROM (a company called Delmar Cengage Learning). Lucky me, I can pay $29.99 for the online companion, and I can't get the files, source code for the programs or games, will have to go elsewhere for the Bloodshed Dev-C++ (easy enough), and won't get the "useful links." I don't give a dang at this point if this is a good book or not, I feel completely ripped by the fact that I can pay nearly double for the "companion" information than I paid for the Kindle book. Total ripoff.Get more detail about Beginning C++ Through Game Programming, Second Edition.

Cheapest Practical Arduino: Cool Projects for Open Source Hardware (Technology in Action)

Highly recommend this book for anyone pursuing a more in depth knowledge of the Arduino.Get more detail about Practical Arduino: Cool Projects for Open Source Hardware (Technology in Action).

Cheap William Tell Told Again

With "William Tell Told Again" P. G. Wodehouse ventured into the area of Children's literature. Originally published on November 11th, 1904, the story fits exactly the title, as Wodehouse retells the legend of William Tell in kind of a "Fractured Fairy Tales" manner. Of course, retelling a legend which is fairly straight-forward is considerably different then the carefully crafted twisting tales that Wodehouse is famous for, and even different than his earlier school stories which tended to have not quite so many twists to them. Nevertheless, Wodehouse does an admirable job of turning the legend into a light, quick, and enjoyable read.

Wodehouse takes some liberties with the legend itself, and of course turning it into a humorous light-hearted story changes it quite a bit from the serious telling of the tale. One device which does well is the adding in of characters like "Arnold of Sewa", a man who always thinks he should be chosen for the important jobs, but apparently the rest of the townspeople don't agree as he ends up sitting on the sidelines complaining how he could have done better. At the same time, some of the changes prove problematic at times, especially when the story is at its most serious point. Wodehouse pretty much has to abandon the humor at that point and rely on the characterizations from earlier in the book to carry the reader through to the end.

All in all this is a decent foray into children's literature and was a nice diversion after four books of school stories. Adding to the story itself are the illustrations which are mixed in with the story, and the verse which accompanies each illustration. In this way, one gets two telling of the story, one in verse and the other a novel. The illustrations are by Philip Dadd, and the verse was written by John W. Houghton.
