Order Social Media Marketing For Dummies

"Social Media Marketing for Dummies" is the perfect antidote for any marketer who fears that "going social" is something that only consumers do. After reading this book you'll see why businesses large and small have every reason to embrace the social world, too, so long as they are willing to develop a more authentic social voice and become more responsive to consumers. In the tradition of the "For Dummies" series, Shiv Singh's book gives the marketer a gentle nudge into the social world with some practical tips on topics ranging from how to launch a social campaign to applying metrics. By the way, the "For Dummies" title is something of a misnomer. Shiv's insights are quite applicable for experts, too, an example being his chapter on building a Social Influence Marketing mobile campaign. I work closely with Shiv at Razorfish and am lucky to enjoy the benefit of his insights all the time.Get more detail about Social Media Marketing For Dummies.

Shop For Practical Guide to Linux Commands, Editors, and Shell Programming, A (2nd Edition)

I really wanted to like this book as I am now a regular linux desktop user and want to learn shell/perl scripting. Unfortunately this book has been a tremendous letdown. The presentation of topics and the code examples do not build on one another and the ordering too often seems haphazard.

Readability of code samples is hindered by not numbering lines of code. It's a lot easier to read when the text says "Line 24 specifies the variable...." instead of trying to find the line referenced by "The third say statement specifies the variable....".

Most damning in my mind is the repeated sin of referencing material not yet covered in examples. So when I am reading page 200 there is no reason to throw out a code sample with material that won't be covered until page 450. This book is replete with examples like this! It's as if they had a general idea of the topics they wanted to cover, they wrote the text and code samples for each topic and only then decided on the order in which to present the information. I'm sorry to report that learning from this book is far more frustrating than it should be.Get more detail about Practical Guide to Linux Commands, Editors, and Shell Programming, A (2nd Edition).

The Lifted Veil

Wow...

This book had me saying wow early on, and perhaps this was the first sign that I was in the presence of significant literature. Basically, George Eliot (literature buffs know this is Mary Anne Evans) strikes you in 'The Lifted Veil' immediately with a somber punch worthy of Edgar Allen Poe, followed by drama, romance, and a hint of the mystic. The tone remains constant in it's dark mood, but this did little to dampen my enthusiasm as a reader. Already this book has climbed into my top 20 short stories involving romance.

I really would hate to spoil your reading of this great tale with spoilers, but suffice it to say the allusion of the title is referring to the marital veil primarily, and not the veil of death, although that could be also intended on a lesser note. So, basically, I would consider this a great read for anyone ever contemplating marriage, as a cautionary tale. It really does have some good insight into that, as well as the 'pecking order' of family relationships.

Overall, a period romance with a very personal, very somber, slightly mystic and very male feel to it, which distinguishes it greatly.

Highly recommended.

The Big Switch: Rewiring the World, from Edison to Google This instant

The Big Switch is a well written book that takes the reader a a journey through time and the technology that makes our day the way it is. It starts by talking about how accessible power changed the way factories and communities worked. The more that bought electricity the cheaper it became and eventually the majority is reliant upon that power. Taking this concept Carr parallels the development of electricity to our modern web era. Today most of us can't get by without checking our email or facebook status updates. We have become reliant upon it and us it in every day situations, google maps, ordering pizza, taking to our family and making business plans/advancements. Overall the book opened my mind to how the internet is changing our societies and cultures into one big melting pot.Get more detail about The Big Switch: Rewiring the World, from Edison to Google.

Professional Excel Development: The Definitive Guide to Developing Applications Using Microsoft Excel, VBA, and .NET (2nd Edition) Immediately

I teach Excel and am a VBA developer. I laughed as I read chapter 3, titled "General Application Development Best Practices", because I found myself thinking, wow, if I had read this book 15 years ago I could have saved myself tons of grief! It is one of the BEST summaries of "good vba practices" that I've ever seen. For beginning developers, reading chapter 3 alone is worth the cost of the book. After developing for 15 years, I follow almost all of the practices that were covered in that chapter - and can't agree more with the importance of them. I haven't finished going through this book yet but my enthusiasm for the book wouldn't be diminished even if I hated the rest of it.Get more detail about Professional Excel Development: The Definitive Guide to Developing Applications Using Microsoft Excel, VBA, and .NET (2nd Edition).

You Are Not a Gadget: A Manifesto Decide Now

The content of this book is somewhat different than the many other books on the topic of technological change and its ramifications. The author of book does not really argue against technological advancement, but instead argues that certain technological changes actually prohibit better ones from occurring. In addition, sometimes the classification of these changes as advances requires that one "devalue" or "demean" the human experience, he asserts. It would be fair to classify most of the contents of this book as mere opinions, since the author does not really justify his assertions quantitatively or scientifically. Sometimes the reader gets a heavy dose of anger, cynicism, and elitism from the author, and so the book demands patience and discipline to get through. However as compared to other books that address similar topics, this one is relatively mild in tone and temperament.

The UNIX operating system, the MIDI representation of musical notes, and the file system all take a hit in the book as being "locked in" and "inalterable" developments in information technology. This means, according to the author, that any improvements to these will not happen, and further, that such a "lock-in" might happen to the very definition of what it means to be human. Uniformity, Web page templates, anonymity of commentary all he says contribute to a dull, unimaginative online presence which acts in the long run to degrade "ordinary" people. Interestingly, the does not articulate on what it means to be "ordinary", and if he did he might become aware of his (seeming) lack of respect for human beings in general.

Anonymity in online presence also seems to act as a strong perturbation to the author's psyche, but for those who have experienced anonymous criticism from this venue and in the academic world, verbal sadism is nothing new, and in the latter predates the rise of the Internet. The ugliness, cowardice, and irrationality of anonymous criticism is not likely to go away, either online or in academia, along with "proud extroversion" that the author feels has been diminished because of the "standardized" designs on social sites and Weblogs. But it must be remembered that standardization often accompanies innovation, once the bugs and limitations of the innovation have been ironed out. Economy of thought and speed of access and use are the natural consequences of standardization. And there is no sign that innovation has been stifled online or in any other field of human endeavor. Indeed, the twenty-first century is a perfect example of Schumpeterian innovation, and entire companies have been wiped out because of their failure to indulge in the hyper-competition of contemporary technological change.

As sociology based on quantitative research via statistical sampling, this book does not deliver, especially when he speaks of the tendency of crowds to revert to "bad moblike behaviors." What evidence is there of this, besides the anecdotes that are presented in the book? And what are the "sound financial principles" that were replaced by "computing clouds"? Are there any examples of attempts to "transform the conduct of science" along the lines of what the author is criticizing? This is of great interest to historians of science and philosophers of science.

The book is not without merit though, as there is an optimistic tone at the end, and some intriguing ideas for further research and investigation. One of these concerns the origin of the cerebral cortex as being in the olfactory system. Another is the delineation of two systems of language, one to serve as a descriptor and classifier, and the other having its origin in the affective part of the brain, i.e. the one that controls the emotion of displeasure. Swearing it seems, has its own module in the brain. The author is speculating a lot here, but such is the nature of innovation. He and many others continue to engage in it, and for this reason he should stop worrying and learn to love the bomb of the twenty-first century.Get more detail about You Are Not a Gadget: A Manifesto.

Excel 2007: The Missing Manual Right now

I've been an Office user for many, many years, but Microsoft keeps adding what they consider to be features and with Office 2007, they changed the User Interface.

The Missing Manuals series are generally excellent, so I bought all of the volumes available covering Office 2007 for use as references when I needed them.

As it happens, with Office 2010 just becoming available, I needed a reference to Excel 2007 immediately - and my volume of Excel 2007:The Missing Manual was at hand.

Lifesaver. I needed a crash course in Pivot Tables and that is precisely what I got. More than enough to carry me through the basics in a flash.

I also had to review the book's treatment of Excel functions. I was trying to do some data manipulation. Normally I would just write a program to do this, but this project was a bit bigger and I wanted to take care of all that needed to be done in a single app.

The first seven chapters deal with the basics and then some of spreadsheets. For beginners, this is must-read material. More experienced users will probably be okay with just skimming it. The next 21 chapters bring the reader deeper and deeper into Excel's very great capabilities. This is not one of those books where the reader is constantly told that the subject at hand is beyond the scope of the book. The author's provide very substantial detail, but their writing style is crisp and clear, free of pedantry, It is actually pleasant to read, despite being a technical manual.

As I said, this book has been sitting on the shelf, having been purchased as a reference for the moment I would need an authoritative education on some aspect of Excel 2007 in a hurry.

Thanks to being well researched, well written and amply supplied with illustrations and examples, the book saved me.

What more can you ask?

Jerry

Lowest Price The Praise of Folly

"It is not wisdom to be always wise, and on the inward vision close the eyes" That is Santayana's wisdom. To play with it a bit ," It is not foolish always to be a fool, and on the outward shows and games of mankind make endless mockery. For who is the fool in the one place we are all to go?"
I remember reading this work in graduate school. A dutiful plodder wondering why I was not laughing out loud and being so amused. Rather I was falling asleep inside and finding the dull complaints of Erasmus a kind of spiritless exercise in predictable dumping on all things.
Alas, I am usually apologetic about not understanding works generations of mankind consider classics. But in this case I will make a modest disclaimer. This one is not in my eyes a great one, not even a very good one.
And now to another complaint. The great tolerant Erasmus who could see the folly of human greed and vanity and prejudice everywhere was himself quite vain and greed and prejudiced in regard to one very small minority of 'Europeans' who can claim to be the most persecuted people in the history of mankind. Why should I sing the praises of someone who hates me?
The bootsteps of Nazism march to the tune that Erasmus and Voltaire the two great ' liberators' of European mankind sing.
I have no praise for Erasmus folly and his wickedness in this.Get more detail about The Praise of Folly.

Low Price Windows 7 All-in-One For Dummies

I found the book much too basic, written as if the reader had no idea of what Windows was, maybe for someone who was marooned on a desert island for the past 15 years. Most people know what Windows is and how to use it.

Additionally, it was difficult to follow. When he explained an interesting item, you are referred to another book and another section (8 books in 1).
And 800 pages? The different sections, or books as they are called, were written by different people and there is just way too much stuff to dig through to find anything useful. Maybe if you had a few months to sit and read the book from the beginning it might be okay, but who has that kind of time or fortitude.Get more detail about Windows 7 All-in-One For Dummies.

Save Victory

I will in all likelihood remember "Victory" as one of the more inconsistent reads I've ever encountered, not in terms of tone, style or plot but in terms of my fluctuating interest in the tale Conrad spun and what he wanted to say with it. Often I felt myself pushed away by a lumbering pace and wooden caricatures to the outer ionosphere of reader absorption, nearing a point where the thin gravity of my interest in its grander themes was the only thing keeping me from snapping off into orbit and relegating the book unfinished to the dusty shelves. Then, the book would pull me back in by way of a beautifully phrased summation of Heyst's life or philosophy, which is what I seemed to admire and/or connect with most about "Victory". In fact, my problem with the first third of the book was not knowing more about Heyst - far too many pages are used up on Schomberg and the villains, who to me felt more goofy than menacing.

The book's characterizations also dip in and out of authenticity and humanity. Perhaps we are meant to feel detached from Heyst for much of the story, unable to truly "touch" him, as it were. But the girl Lena and his Chinese island companion Wang are, for the most part, two-dimensional, every once in a while popping into the third-dimension albeit all-too-briefly, yet just enough to keep my hand turning the pages. I also found the presence of the strange wildman Pedro completely inexplicable and rather campy, which served further to undermine the villains' menace.

The novel retains very hearty, muscular prose throughout. It's regrettable that Conrad's beautiful line-by-line style, in conjunction with a very promising premise, wasn't married to fuller, more believable characters and better pacing.

Cheapest Total Workday Control Using Microsoft Outlook, 2nd Edition

Very useful and practical book. The irony of most of these kinds of books is that if you really need a time management book, you won't actually make the time to read the time management book, much less put the lessons into practice.

Unlike most "get organized" books, this one doesn't require very much time investment (1-2 hours) to start seeing a benefit. You can start by just following the step-by-step instructions to reconfigure Outlook so that the task system works more intuitively than the default settings in Outlook. I've done that, and it's worthwhile.

Buying South Sea Tales

To start with, this is NOT "South Sea Tales." The original collection of Jack London short stories bearing that title is a collection of 8 stories as far as I have been able to determine, and only some of those appear in this collection. Publishers have been misleading readers by putting out a wide variety of editions that contain SOME stories from South Sea Tales, and using the same original title without indicating that it is not the original. To give the present publisher credit, if you check inside to read the table of contents, it contains 10 stories, only four of which are from South Sea Tales, but the book cover can mislead a purchaser who is not careful (Amazon, at least, gives you the option of checking inside).

Having said that, it represents some of the lesser writing by Jack London. It is not at the level of his writing about the Yukon. If you are a Jack London fan, you might want to read it. Otherwise save your money. I might have given it three stars if the publisher had used an honest title, but I am irked by publishers who mislead purchasers (another problem has been publishers who change a title on a book, so you think you are buying something new and end up with something you have already read).Get more detail about South Sea Tales.

Buy Hamlet's BlackBerry: A Practical Philosophy for Building a Good Life in the Digital Age

I was intrigued by the title of the book and a bit skeptical of whether it would be
too intellectual. So I read the book and was pleasantly surprised that the author speaks to all audiences.

Reading this book really woke me up as I was very connected and was wondering why I always felt like I was on a merry go round trying to get off.

Hamlet's Blackberry was certainly an eye opener and a scary one. It was so refreshing to have Powers, who is a brillant writer, share his personal stories, as the idea in the book is to enjoy the digital age but also to have deeper meaning in life with rich relationships. It was also a great balance for the book. I could identify with just about every example he shared.

I've started on my journey of disconnecting. I'm going to start observing Sabbath Sunday by turning my computer off on Saturday night until Monday morning and hope to progress to the whole weekend as Powers does. I will then hop on the freedom train and enjoy the journey.

Thank you William Powers. You are truly a genius with a beautiful soul.Get more detail about Hamlet's BlackBerry: A Practical Philosophy for Building a Good Life in the Digital Age.

Order Trust Agents: Using the Web to Build Influence, Improve Reputation, and Earn Trust

Written primarily for individuals working for themselves or large corporations, seeking to gain business advantage using social media, Trust Agents is a handy resource for the novice and beginner user, offering them insight and tools to gain influence and trust in online communities. Filled with case studies and examples, the early chapters lay the theoretically foundation for Brogan and Smith's paradigm-shifting proposition: seek to give to your customers instead of seeking to get something from them. In an increasingly transparent online world, becoming a trust agent is hard work and, according to Brogan and Smith, entails: 1.writing your own rules to a system you can control; 2. putting yourself in the shoes of your customers and learning to be genuine and honest; 3. leveraging everything at your disposal (technology, people, resources) to accomplish your goals; 4. being the center of your network, orchestrating the transfer or deployment of resources on behalf of others in your network; 5. learning people skills; and 6. involving a large group of people to accomplish a tall task.

What Brogan and Smith do well is demystify the process of establishing an online presence into easy actionable steps that inspire you to get started right away. They dispel the ROI myth that blogs and social networks are big moneymakers. Most don't make money or significant returns necessary to justify the investment. They clue you into the fact that the web is a conversation and employing in-person rules of etiquette online will garner success. Everything flows from being involved actively in the conversation in your particular area of expertise.

If you participate in social media, most of the writings can seem oversimplified. Sections on interacting with people on the web seem like common sense. You'll also find they don't delve too deep into any particular topic. Often, insights are interrupted with the obvious such as "including a profile photo helps build trust online." Also, their attempts at jargoneering aren't terribly memorable.

For people looking for trenchant thought leadership in the realm of social media, this offers nothing all-too original or earth-shattering. But what it does offer, especially to the beginner are good portions of inspiration in tidy, digestible morsels.

Where To Buy Chance- A Tale in Two Parts

A chance meeting with a Mr Powell leads Marlow to recollect his chance connections To the Feins-and Mrs Feins' brother Captain Anthony ; his chance meeting with Flora De Barrel, daughter of a disgraced financier, and their elopement on Anthonys ship.
Chance occurances and happenings connect lifes machinations according to Conrad, and this story unfolds gracefully on such chances ,with the proceedings kept in witty check by Marlows narration.
Conrad is the master of descriptive, meticulously detailed story telling and 'Chance' is no exception to this rule. Blueprints in Obstetrics and Gynecology Get it now!

This is an excellent source for a beginner learning OB/GYN. It has a good breadth of information from labor and delivery to GYN oncology, and it is well written. It reads like a textbook, but the author does an excellent job keeping important points in without filling the page with extraneous information. I was happy with how simplistic it was to read for a 3rd year med student. It really doesn't require any outside resource to understand, and it has more than enough information to get you through your shelf exam at the end of a clerkship. It does have its downfalls, however. The questions at the end of the book are great, but they don't allow you to practice questions at the end of each chapter. Also, it fails to lack that clinical teaching that helps students recognize the condition when it is presented in a clinical vignette. For these reasons, I recommend using Case Files along with this book, which is an excellent companion.Get more detail about Blueprints in Obstetrics and Gynecology.

Save Digital Wedding Photography: Capturing Beautiful Memories

I have read many, many books on wedding photography, and this is by far the best and most comprehensive book on wedding photography ever written. It takes into account that you already know how to operate your camera, and are a skilled photographer already, it then takes that skill and shows you how to apply it to this specific profession. It looks at all styles, and methods. If you are looking to become a professional wedding photographer, this is a must have reference.Get more detail about Digital Wedding Photography: Capturing Beautiful Memories.

Buying David Busch's Canon EOS Rebel T2i/550D Guide to Digital SLR Photography

My disappointment is why I've rated this 3 stars. As a "pure" textbook purporting to explain the T2i it is a 5 star rating. But if you have any prior use of this camera or search and use forums, I would suspect you, like me, would be disappointed.

I expected not so much a better manual, but a real how to use this camera.

Suggestions on picture styles.. how to adjust and use them with optimum selections ..i.e. is sharpness critical..is contrast critical.. nothing..

Why I should use adjust picture styles and with what light/exposure..what about tones??

More on highlight priority..light optimization..

How about the movie mode..this book should have a large disclaimer that it only "touches" this subject ..like a manual. Why has this camera captured the "movie-maker nuts" out there and why you or I should go "nuts" likewise.

The flash section is pretty good, although you can find more with a Google search

I wanted to learn how to use this camera, not how to understand what the menu items mean.

So for me 3 stars ... But again as a substitute to the manual it is 5 stars

Buy Canon EOS Rebel T1i/500D For Dummies

I was just starting out with photography and my husband bought me the canon rebel T1i. It's a rather advanced camera and I felt completely out of place using it, so I was soo excited to see this book is actually available. I've never used a 'for dummies" book and it was amazingly easy. They have pictures for you to see what it's supposed to look like as you are doing it on your camera, which is really helpful as well as side notes that are extremely easy to find and very useful! I haven't gotten everything down pat yet,but there is a lot to this camera..im sure with more practice and having this book as a reference, it's only a matter of time. I would suggest it for anyone just started out with the camera! Also,Amazon had the book to me in a little under a week so that was great because i got free shipping for spending $25, most places I pay for shipping and it takes a lot longer.Get more detail about Canon EOS Rebel T1i/500D For Dummies.

Purchase Wild West 2.0: How to Protect and Restore Your Reputation on the Untamed Social Frontier

So you've opened accounts and signed up for social networks from Facebook to LinkedIn. Maybe you have a YouTube `channel' and are available through your business on a variety of other sites. How can you guarantee that you still maintain some degree of privacy while still enjoying the resources available in the online universe?

Welcome to `Wild West 2.0.'

In this volume, authors Michael Fertik and David Thompson present a systematic explanation of how, even with the best intentions, a modern day internet user can fall victim to spammers, scammers, and worse, those who may seek to besmirch ones reputation by either lifting information or creating false profiles that either block, or create identities that are far afield from your own.

From dating sites to political campaign trackers, the web is full of personal data landmines, that, while on the surface may pose no intentional threat to you, but can be used by less-than-honorable operators to assemble a personal dossier on total strangers by combining information from one site with data from another, in order to create a complete identity based on the aggregation of what was once considered piece-meal information.

In Wild West 2.0, the authors set out a number of examples of how to protect your web identity and reputation by methodically determining your specific goals about personal internet usage and even making a list of what you wish to accomplish and what people should be privy to your data.

Beyond the `normal' uses of the net (search engines, e-commerce, social sites, etc.) the book expounds on a series of schemes designed to have an impact in the worlds of politics, crime and other fraudulent perpetrations. (Check out the people that tried to make fake donations to the Obama campaign under names like Bill Ayers and Rev. Wright attempting to create political gain by making it appear that Obama had these guys as financial supporters.) The coverage here is broad and certainly will inform most readers on topics and areas of concern that they had heretofore not likely considered. There is even a bonus chapter at: [...]. Order Head First Java, 2nd Edition

Do you EVER remember laughing out loud while studying a computer language? (I'm not talking about the sleep-deprived, caffeine-induced, maniacal style). Well, I find myself laughing, and learning, in every single chapter of Head First Java. Kathy Sierra and Bert Bates write in an engaging style, combining fun visuals with effective analogies that truly make learning fun. I highly recommend the book.Head First Java, 2nd EditionGet more detail about Head First Java, 2nd Edition.

Where To Buy The Mythical Man-Month: Essays on Software Engineering, Anniversary Edition (2nd Edition)

The Mythical Man-Month is Frederick Brooks' seminal collection of essays vis-a-vis software engineering. From the title, one would imagine that the tome's unifying thesis revolves around the discredited idea that adding more engineers to a project will enable the project to be completed in fewer months, or, to put it another way, that the length of a project's schedule is a linear function of the number of workers assigned to that project. Using graphs based on mathematical formulas and on research conducted by other specialists, Brooks neatly dismantles the person-month myth - demonstrating, in fact, that in many projects (particularly if complex interrelationships are required or if the project is behind schedule), adding more bodies often increases the time required for completion.

Despite what the title suggests, however, the above-mentioned topic is but one of many covered by this work. Other topics include the distinction between the "essential" and "accidental" elements of software design; the distinction between building a computer program vs. designing a "programming a systems product" (and the ninefold difference in complexity and time between the two); the quest for software engineering's elusive "silver bullet"; the importance of documentation; the surprisingly small percentage of time that actual writing of code occupies on the timeline of a typical software-development project (as contrasted with time needed for testing and debugging); large teams vs. small "surgical teams" (and why the latter isn't always the answer for all projects); the "buy versus build" dilemma; and many others.

Much of the material in the first several chapters of the book appears obsolete (although there are still valuable principles that can be gleaned). However, in chapter 19 (a kind of "retrospective" chapter added 20 years after the original publication date), Brooks amends much of the out-of-date material, e.g., his earlier views on program size and space metrics (rendered all but irrelevant in this age of multi-gigabyte memory), and the degree to which the (albeit hard-to-predict) personal computer explosion and the growth of the Internet. However, even since the time of the book's revision (1995), further explosions have taken place in the computing industry - most notably with regards to Web 2.0, the ubiquity of data-driven Web applications (these even obsoleting many shrink-wrapped products), Web services, and development methodologies such as Agile and XP - that even chapter 19 may seem a little out-of-date to the modern developer. In spite of this, the principles of the book are still applicable: the chapters on estimation, team size, and the dismantling of the person-month myth are enough to make this tome required reading for developers and managers alike - especially the latter.Get more detail about The Mythical Man-Month: Essays on Software Engineering, Anniversary Edition (2nd Edition).
