This is required reading if you are doing enterprise development. Even for it's age, POEAA is still THE foundation of the patterns that will be used daily. Some of the material, particularly the object-relational mapping patterns, will be a little to low-level to actually be practically useful (considering the existing frameworks available today) - but still it provides a good background on how this stuff actually works.
